Chapter Sixteen - Return Of The Books

Shannon woke up on Saturday morning feeling terrible. She had barely slept. The day, in sharp contrast to her mood, was bright and sunny. She could see the wood from her bedroom window, and closed her eyes again. The bright green leaves on the branches of the nearest tree were shifting back and forth in the gentle breeze, almost as if they were shaking their head at her.

Usually she found the trees comforting. And she had met Jax in the woods so many times before the portal room was built, that it had seemed like their place. Now that was kind of ruined.

If Jax had arrived only one second later, he would have seen her pushing Andy away. She had just been frozen in surprise. And, if she was being completely honest, the look of wonder on Andy’s face before he kissed her (and the fact that he was a very good kisser) had been a bit distracting.

Andy had tried to reassure her before he went home the night before. He had taken Jax’s mobile number, promising to text him to apologise again and try to explain. He was back to being Penny’s older brother, friendly but slightly distant, and Shannon wondered how they could ever have shared a kiss. Sometimes magic creates more problems than it solves, she thought unhappily to herself.

Shannon was planning to spend the day at home. She had drafted at least ten different texts to Jax, but had deleted all of them unsent. Penny kept asking her to go round, guessing that something had happened, but not exactly what it was. Shannon had refused, knowing that Valentina was coming to see Penny that afternoon, and incredibly embarrassed at the thought of seeing Andy again. What if, she thought in horror, he thinks I’m there because of him?

Feeling rather sorry for herself, she spent the morning in bed, the television on in the background, and a book about the coming of age ceremony open next to her. Shannon really wanted to learn more about that particular Androvan tradition. But she gave up after reading the same chapter three times without properly taking in any of it.

Eventually, with a big sigh, she projected a Cleaning Spell and got dressed. She was just staring at her face in the mirror, wishing she didn’t still look so guilty, when there was a knock at the door. Her little sister Tammy came inside, asking if Shannon was sick.

“No, just depressed.”

“What’s depressed?” asked Tammy, her eight year old face curious. “Dad says he’s depressed when his football team loses.”

Shannon half-smiled. “Yeah. I just mean I’m down about something. Well, in this case, someone.”

“Who? Mum or Dad? Penny? Or… your boyfriend?” asked Tammy, screwing her face up slightly. She liked the concept of living happily ever after like one of her favourite princesses, but thought the idea of kissing someone to make it happen was ‘yucky’.

“Jax and I had an argument about something, that’s all.”
